NPA turns up sports nutrition dial as it names Kalman as science VP
NPA president and CEO Daniel Fabricant, PhD, said it’s true that Kalman will help the organization beef up its authority in that area. But that’s not all he brings to the table, he said.
“We think of Doug as someone who’s a mile wide and a mile deep. He has a great background in IP as well as research in a number of areas,” Fabricant told NutraIngredients-USA.
Kalman is one of the leading lights in the International Society of Sports Nutrition as well as being an adjunct faculty member at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Kalman holds a PhD in exercise and nutritional biochemistry from an online arm of Touro University, which is based in California.
Kalman, whose new title is Senior Vice President for scientific and regulatory affairs, said he will continue his teaching duties at the Nova Southeastern. Kalman’s new position at NPA officially begins today.
Kalman admitted that his predecessor, Sibyl Swift, PhD, ticked boxes on her resumé that he does not, having come to NPA directly from FDA, as Fabricant did himself. But Kalman said he brings a wealth of relevant experience to bear on his new role. He most recently was vice president of scientific affairs at Nutrasource.
“It’s true that Sibyl did actually work for FDA. I have a different kind of FDA experience. Mine has been more on the side of interacting with the Agency on topics related to science and regulation,” he said.
“I have interacted with FDA on the evaluation of products in the food, nutrition, dietary supplement, medical device and pharmaceutical spaces,” he said.
Kalman: NPA is another educational opportunity
Kalman said he views his new role is a similar way to how he goes about his teaching duties. It’s about educating a given audience about the science behind nutrition, he said.
“One of my goals in my professional career has been to further the acceptance of the science of nutrition within the medicine and health care in this country,” he said. “I think this will be another means that I can help further the understanding of that science. There is a lot of education needed within Congress and within Congressional staffs on the science behind, food, nutrition and supplement products.”
William J. Rowe, President and CEO of Nutrasource, added the following comment: “On behalf of the Nutrasource Team, we wish to thank Dr. Kalman for his many contributions to the growth of the company during his tenure. Although it is always tough to say good-bye to a key colleague, we wish Dr. Kalman much success in his new role with NPA.”
In a statement NPA noted that in addition to his involvement with ISSN Kalman is also a member of the following organizations: American Society for Nutrition, American College of Sports Medicine, National Strength & Conditioning Organization, American Physiological Society, and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
