Chinese supplier Fenchem is gearing up to launch branded fatty acid
ingredients oma-3, omega-3, and liveflax flax lignans for the
European market.

According to the company, oma-3 is available in both oil and powder forms of triglycerides or ethyl esters for multiple applications, while liveflax comes in 20 per cent SDG (secoisolariciresinol diglycoside, the primary lignan found in flax seed) and 40 per cent SDG. The global market for omega-3 fatty acids have been dominated by marine players such as fish oils, which have a high content of omega-3 fatty acids EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid, while flaxseed yields the shorter chain, and less bioavailable, fatty acid ALA (alpha-linolenic acid). DHA is coveted as a building block of the brain that supports cognition, eye health, mood and memory. In 2004 the European market for omega-3 was valued at approximately €160mm more than three-quarters of which was generated by marine oils. Market research indicates that the global marine oil market is set to grow at a rate of 13 per cent per annum leading to 2010.
