Online health and wellness retailer iHerb has expanded its proprietary dietary supplement range with three new products developed by Dr. Mehmet Oz and Dr. Michael Murray to combat common side effects from GLP-1 drugs.

The three products were developed to address common side effects of semaglutide (GLP-1 agonists) such as digestive issues including nausea and pain, loss of muscle mass and skin elasticity, and changing blood sugar levels.

The new GLP-1 support product line includes CollagenUP Plus, Berberine Advanced, and Digestion Pro, and are available under iHerb’s California Gold Nutrition house brand of supplements.

The products were conceived and developed in collaboration with health and wellness experts Dr. Mehmet Oz, iHerb's Global Advisor and Stakeholder, and Dr. Michael Murray, iHerb's Chief Scientific Advisor, according to a press release from iHerb.

"After months of preparation, we are proud to introduce our new California Gold Nutrition supplements specifically formulated to mitigate the adverse effects of GLP-1 therapy," said Emun Zabihi, CEO of iHerb. "Collaborating with esteemed health experts Dr. Mehmet Oz and Dr. Michael Murray, we have developed products that enhance overall well-being and demonstrate our dedication to addressing our customers' needs.”

A growing market

According to a recent survey by KFF and reported by CNN, about 6% of American adults, or more than 15 million people, are currently being prescribed GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic or Mounjaro. That number may jump to up 70 million by 2028.

While the efficacy of the drugs is clear to see, usage comes with side effects, including gastrointestinal issues, muscle and bone loss, and lower micronutrient intakes. A recent report revealed 60% stopped using their GLP-1 medication before reaching their targeted duration, with many citing negative side effects as a factor for quitting.

In response, nutrition-focused brands have already jumped into the GLP-1 support space, with GNC the first to announce a GLP-1 support program in April.  GNC’s offering, which is featured in all 2,300-plus US locations, is aimed at managing the common side effects and challenges associated with treatment.

Shortly after this, the Vitamin Shoppe launched Whole Health Rx, a service offering nutritional supplements, expert guidance on lifestyle practices, and prescription medications including GLP-1 agonists.

And just this week, Nestlé Health Science launched a new web platform to provide nutritional support for individuals on their weight management journey.

Supplements Overview

"Incorporating GLP-1 support products into daily routines can enhance one's health and wellness journey by making the side effects from treatment more manageable," said Dr. Oz in the release. "We take great pride in knowing that these scientifically-backed offerings will allow people to live more comfortably, take the guesswork out of daily metabolic health, and ensure they stick to their treatment plan to achieve their desired results."

The new California Gold Nutrition CollagenUP Plus is formulated with hydrolyzed marine collagen for skin health, prebiotic fiber blend for digestive health, and essential amino acids to support muscle health.

Berberine Advanced features Berbevis, a phytosome formulation to support healthy body composition and blood sugar levels.

Digestion Pro features Prodigest, a plant-based blend designed to optimize digestive function.

"Our goal was to create products that addressed the side effects of GLP-1 head on, from improved digestive function, to enhanced metabolism and blood sugar support, and better-retained muscle mass," said Dr. Murray. "Each of these products was carefully designed using the highest-quality natural ingredients to ensure optimal effectiveness."
