California close to ephedra ban

The California Senate yesterday passed legislation to ban ephedra-containing supplements from store shelves. If Governor Davis signs the bill, the state will be third to ban the weight-loss herbal from natural health products.

Tomato extract to quicken the blood

UK firm Provexis looks set to release a novel heart-healthy drink next year after recent human trials on its tomato-based product proved successful. CardioFlow is a concentrated tomato extract but it contains no lycopene.

Danisco promotes pectin

Danish ingredients company Danisco continues on the innovative trail with the addition of a new pectin to its Grinsted series. Earlier in the year the company invested in a pectin boost by expanding its Czech production facilities.

US oat-based ingredients maker Nurture has seen its concentrated oat bran OatVantage emerge for the first time in supplement form, providing a convenient way to help lower cholesterol levels and reduce heart disease risk, it claims.
