Sports performance and muscle recovery: New research shows perceived benefits of turmeric supplementation

Last updated on

Daily exercise is vital for our physical and mental wellbeing, and a vast array of research supports this.

The 2023 study, ‘Role of Physical Activity on Mental Health and Well-Being: A Review’ highlights the positive impact of exercise on mental health: ‘It has been shown that exercise can improve attention, focus, memory, cognition, language fluency, and decision-making for up to two hours’.1

At the same time, active adults and athletes can experience muscle soreness and challenges with functional recovery following exercise – and this can hinder people in their daily activities. However natural, botanical solutions may be the answer.

There have been numerous studies documenting the benefits of turmeric for sports performance and post-exercise recovery.2,3 A 2021 meta-analysis study highlighted that turmeric supplementation may be linked to post-exercise soreness and recovery.3

Sports performance and post-exercise soreness

Active adults may experience a range of challenges during and after exercise. Just a few of these include:

  • General fatigue
  • Muscle soreness
  • Strength recovery
  • Delays in training due to soreness

Symptoms of exercise-induced muscle damage are well documented in scientific literature.4 Both elite and novice athletes can face delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), a common symptom of muscle damage due to sport. Symptoms can range from muscle tenderness to severe soreness.4 Countless sports enthusiasts around the world experience DOMS. Muscle damage can lead to a prolonged reduction in muscle function and can negatively impact performance.4

There are varied tips and techniques for maximizing sports performance and muscle recovery. These include consuming protein-rich foods, taking dietary supplements, drinking enough water, getting enough sleep, massage, compression garments and even cryotherapy (cold therapy) – exposure to extremely cold temperatures for a few minutes.5,6,7

When supporting post-exercise muscle recovery and function, there is an ever-increasing demand for effective natural solutions.8 TurmiPure GoldTM  has been shown to optimize sports performance and recuperation.

Optimizing post-sports recovery

A 2024 study illustrated the benefits of a substantiated turmeric extract formulation TurmiPure GoldTM  in a sports recovery context, both in improving muscle recovery and post-exercise soreness and function.9 There were perceived improvements related to muscle soreness and the ability to reinitiate training schedules.

The cohort were 108 high to moderately active healthy men and women between 20 to 50 years old – participating in at least three sport or exercise activities and at least one intense activity per week. The study included a baseline evaluation and a self-reported follow up after one week and two weeks of taking TurmiPure GoldTM.  Participants:

  • Had experienced muscle soreness in the past (at least once per week)
  • Had an interest in muscle recovery supplement solutions
  • Were using or have used a nutritional supplement in the past year
  • Were open to consuming nutritional supplements for muscle recovery

Participants were given a 300mg dose of TurmiPure GoldTM for 14 days. They were asked to fill in questionnaires at baseline, and again after 7 and 14 days of consumption, while maintaining their regular training activity. The key findings were significant. After one week, 61% of participants were satisfied.

After two weeks:

  • 76% of participants were satisfied
  • 71% reported less muscle soreness and discomfort
  • 57% note an improvement in physical performance
  • 62% reported less physical fatigue
  • 69% would recommend the supplement
  • 79% said the product was better than or equal to muscle recovery products previously used

Furthermore, users reported experiencing increased energy, quicker muscle recovery, and reduced soreness, which contributed to perceived improvement in workout performance and recovery. Additionally, some noted mental benefits such as improved focus and less fatigue. The supplement was also perceived as convenient, with a single capsule dosage and minimal side effects, making it a favorable addition to users' routines.
