Are gummies efficacious enough? Nuherbs gives us something to chew on

The gummy format continues to grow, with sales bringing in over $2.6 billion in the 52 weeks ending Sept 20th, according to data from SPINS. However, one of the challenges that comes with formulating gummies is fitting in an efficacious amount. However, ingredient supplier Nuherbs is hoping to change that. The company exhibited at SupplySide West to highlight its technical capabilities to address those limitations.

Consumers are increasingly turning to gummies, but are they giving them the benefits that they are expecting to receive? Wilson Lau, president, Nuherbs, said it’s very difficult to fit an efficacious dose into a gummy.

“The secret really is that we understand the format that's going in and how much needs to go in there and then developing ingredients under our bespoke ingredient program so that we can get the proper dosage into the gummies. But sometimes that's really hard to do in a food format because you also have to factor in taste,” said Lau.

“It's really knowing your herbs–the ingredients and really having that skill set behind what the starting inputs are. It's like cooking, you can never make a dish better than your ingredients. You can ruin the ingredients, but you never make a dish better than ingredients.”

Wilson said that while Nuherbs is very focused on gummies, the company is also experimenting with other convenient formats like oral film bars, baked goods and instant drinks.
