AB InBev’s sustainable ingredient business, EverGrain, said it’s poised to disrupt the performance beverage category this year with the launch of two products that use EverPro, a barley protein made from upcycled brewer’s spent grain.

Brewing beer creates a byproduct called brewer’s spent grain, which has historically been sent to landfills or used in animal feed. AB InBev, the world’s largest brewing company, sources about three million metric tons of malting barley every year, resulting in about 1.4 million metric tons of brewer’s spent grain every year.

Greg Belt, EverGrain’s CEO and founder, said in 2013 he recognized a major opportunity to reimagine brewer’s spent grain. To do this, he created an ingredients business, one that would unleash the hidden potential in our grain for the health of people and our planet. Fast-forward to today, the company has built and acquired technology, production capabilities and a R&D team to upcycle brewer’s spent grain into a sustainable supply of nutritious ingredients.

The company has two RTM protein powders that were developed for the sports nutrition beverage category: EverPro Original and EverPro Clear.

“So they're very like brother and sister ingredients,” said Belt. “The original is ideal for chocolates, caramel's, coffees, it's amazing in plant-based milks, so like your traditional kind of chocolate shake. EverPro clear is lighter in color and more importantly, it’s translucent and has very high solubility low viscosity like, it's like it's brother, but then it can be used in things like a different types of flavors like tropical punch and strawberry and banana, so it can be used as much more of a refreshing protein experience, rather than just the standard chocolate and caramels and stuff like that.”

Belt said that sports nutrition is the strongest marketplace opportunity for EverPro right now because of the void in great tasting, high-quality plant protein options.
