Data published in Nutrients indicated that a single dose of the Nitrosigine-branded ingredient led to significantly improvements on Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) and immediate memory scores, compared to placebo.
On the other hand, no significant improvements were reported for other cognitive scores, including attention, processing speed, recognition memory, language, and visuospatial skills.
“However, it should be noted that a minimal clinically meaningful difference was observed for immediate memory, delayed memory, and global cognition,” wrote researchers from University of Arkansas, St. Elizabeth Healthcare, Neurotrack Technologies, Inc., and JDS Therapeutics LLC.
“Thus, acute [inositol-stabilized arginine silicate] supplementation improved overall cognitive function in healthy adults.”
The ingredient
Nitrosigine has been available in the market for several years, starting off as a pre-workout ingredient due to its ability to increase in levels of the potent vasodilator nitric oxide (NO), a compound which primarily dilates blood vessels and improves blood flow.
The new study adds to earlier data on the potential cognitive health benefits of the ingredient. Kalman et al. published data from two double-blind placebo-controlled crossover studies in 2016 which opened the door beyond the pre-workout category (Nutrients, 8(11), 736).
Those studies used Nitrosigine doses of 1,500 mg per day for three or fourteen days, with cognitive performance measured using the Trail Making Test (TMT).
The new randomized, double-blind, crossover study included 19 young adults also used a single 1500 mg dose of the ingredient.
Study details
Data was available from 16 people who completed the trial. The participants performed three cognitive tests during two separate visits seven days apart: Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS), Digital Image Pairs, and Digital Symbol Match.
The results showed that immediate memory performance in the Nitrosigine group significantly improved compared to the placebo, while Nitrosigine also maintained delayed memory scores in comparison to the placebo group for which delayed memory scores decreased.
The inositol-stabilized arginine silicate ingredient also significantly increased the total RBANS scores showing an 11% increase with Nitrosigine supplementation. The immediate memory scores showed a 27% increase with Nitrosigine supplementation.
Commenting on the study’s findings, Danielle Greenberg, PhD, Vice President, Scientific Affairs, Nutrition21, said: “The results of this study further aligned with previous findings that show how administering Nitrosigine can improve mental focus, memory, and acuity due to an increase in NO levels.
“Therefore, consuming products made with Nitrosigine can help those looking to get in the zone and maximize their performance during a workout, while taking a test, or when performing other tasks of a similar nature.”
