There’s still time to register for NutraIngredients-USA and Cosmetics Design’s joint webinar focused on the beauty from within category. The free virtual event kicks off this Thursday, July 22 at 12pm Eastern / 9am Pacific.
“What we have seen in the market is that there has been a peak in interest and positive conversation around vitamins in beauty products, especially for vitamins B3 and C and particularly in skincare,” said DSM Market Research Analyst Brian Grady. “Consumers recognize that there is a close relationship between the supplements they consume and the skincare products they put on their bodies. In addition, they are more open to trying new products to achieve specific benefits.”
Indeed, attendees will learn more about these specific benefits, the science behind them and the best way to approach opportunities within the nutricosmetic sector.
Esteemed panel
The webinar will feature a talented lineup of panelists, including Asma Ishaq, CEO of Modere; Rachel Jones, MS, RDN, Chief Nutrition Officer at GNC; Dawna Salter Venzon PhD, RD, Principal Research Scientist at Amway Global / Nutrilite; and Deanna Utroske, Editor of Cosmetics Design.
Utroske, who has her finger on the pulse of the industry, said she is especially eager to hear the panelists share insights on their specific company approaches to product development in the category.
“My perspective on beauty-from-within comes from observing the industry’s approach to ingredients and benefits as well as strategic moves in the category, like brand launches, acquisitions and such,” said Utroske. “In recent years the beauty-from-within category has gained mainstream appeal. Today, supplements and ingestibles with beauty benefits are a regular part of consumers’ daily care routines. And consumer interest in wellness and self-care, which have increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, only reinforces the beauty supplement habit.”
According to Data Bridge Market Research, the nutricosmetics market is expected to grow significantly from 2021–2028. Their data shows the sector is growing at a CAGR of 7.07% and points to the rising interest in healthy aging as a key driver of this growth.
Beauty is an inside job
“Beauty and radiance are a direct reflection of our health and wellness. Real, vibrant beauty is an inside job that involves pure nutrition and a clean environment. My life’s work has been dedicated to researching and providing the very best supplements and personal care products to support a live clean lifestyle that promotes health, wellness, and their natural fruit- beauty,” said Ishaq, who added that she is excited to discuss the growing science behind the efficacy and applications of ingredients like collagen, hyaluronic acid, and biotin.
Science meets beauty
Venzon also said she also appreciates research that is centered around functional ingredients and their substantiation for nutribeauty benefits including skin, hair, and nails.
“My positioning is to investigate with due diligence the benefits the ingredients claim to ensure they are backed by appropriate evidence. The best evidentiary base for structure/function benefits is, of course, a double blind placebo controlled human trial looking at outcomes. However, we also need to recognize that this type of evidence can be difficult to generate—nutrition products are not pharmaceuticals and the FDA regulations are different as our industry is not targeted towards treatment or mitigation of disease. Rather, nutraceuticals are about preserving health and wellness. In the case of beauty from within, this usually means preserving the health of the skin, hair, and nails. Evidence of “improved health” (via improved structure/function) in a gold standard study can be more difficult to generate than evidence of disease mitigation. Therefore, in my opinion, the companies that spend the time, money, and creative energy to generate evidence to support claimed benefits are to be commended and appreciated,” said Venzon.
Don’t overlook the basics
“A quality multivitamin supplement should be a part of any beauty-from-within routine. If you’re falling short on essential vitamins and minerals, this can impact the health of your hair, skin and nails,” said Jones. “A comprehensive multivitamin including the following ingredients is key:
- Biotin, a B vitamin that supports the structure of healthy hair, skin and nails
- Antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E, help protect cells from harmful free radicals
- Lutein provides support for skin health
- A comprehensive blend of essential vitamins and minerals at 100% Daily Value (DV) or more.”

During this roundtable discussion, the panel will examine the science of ingredients, the future of nutribeauty and how the pandemic has shifted consumer focus and behavior.
“As a ‘maturing woman’ who works in this area, my personal passion is to really focus on the within component of Beauty from Within…in the sense that beauty is more than just appearance but a reflection of health, physical, psychological, emotional. That a person can reflect beauty through being holistically healthy, not always just about looking young,” said Venzon.
