NutraVideo: Eric Meppem on bioavailability challenges, LipiSperse technology

Eric Meppem, co-founder and director of Pharmactive, explained that curcumin’s lipophilic nature presents two challenges: poor absorption and limited functionality.
“LipiSperse allows different formats to be used. There's a few distinct advantages with it. One of them is the functionality. So it remains a powder which disperses often when you put things which are lipophilic or by definition of hydrophobic into water or into the gastrointestinal gastrointestinal tract. They don't mix. So those hydrophobic particles stick or agglomerate to each other and that limits their bioavailability and it limits their use or the functionality. So by allowing the particles to disperse, not only do they get absorbed better which means you can reduce the dose or have a more efficacious product, it allows that particular ingredient to go into novel formats, which is really important,” said Meppem.
Meppem also spoke about the importance of being backed by science.
“From an evidence perspective, clinical substantiation and proper science is really important for all of our products and the same with our sister company, Gencor. Our products are substantiated by really well-developed formulations supported by science,” said Meppem, who pointed to a study published in the European Journal of Nutrition which demonstrated that HydroCurc with LipiSperse technology improved the bioavailability of curcumin.
“HydroCurc, which utilizes the LipiSperse technology, is able to deliver a higher active load of curcuminoids, allowing the body to reap the numerous health benefits of curcumin better,” Meppem.
