The Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega3s (GOED) has honored Dr Norman Salem, Jr. and Olav Sandnes with GOED Lifetime Achievement Awards.

The awards recognize their efforts to increase global EPA and DHA consumption, said GOED in a release.

Norman Salem, Jr., PhD, is a leading researcher on DHA omega-3s and the physiological functions of polyunsaturated fatty acids and lipids. He directed the internationally recognized Laboratory of Membrane Biochemistry and Biophysics at the National Institutes of Health and was Chief Scientific Officer at Martek Biosciences (now part of DSM).

Olav Sandnes co-founded fish oil supplier Marine Ingredients in 1982 and has been a leader in the omega-3 space ever since. Sandnes was a founding member of the Omega-3 Working Group at the Council for Responsible Nutrition, which eventually became GOED and a member of GOED’s board from its inception until his recent departure, making his tenure the board’s longest at 13 years. In 2016, Marine Ingredients merged with KD Pharma to become the third largest omega-3 supplier worldwide.

Previous winners of the award include:
Pre-GOED Exchange: Phil Fass, Ian Newton, Tony Bimbo
2011: Michael Crawford and Jørn Dyerberg
2012: John Carlson and Robert Orr
2014: Baldur Hjaltason
2016: Clemens von Schacky, Bill Harris, and Bjorn Rene
