We sat down with an industry insider to find out what practices and ingredients are on trend.

Every year we see trends from clothing to music to colors. And the same goes for nutrition. To find out what’s trending, we sat down with Randal Kreienbrink, the vice president of marketing at Martin Bauer, which specializes in botanical products.

Kreienbrink said the demand for plant-based products is up right now, an encouraging trend for Martin Bauer.

“We have been plant-based all our lives, going back 90 years. So it’s something not new to us because all our products, whether they’re botanicals, herbal products, it just goes back to our origin and our root and that’s really all we do work with is plant-based materials.”

From Beyond Meat to Impossible Burgers, meat analogues have really taken off, with unique offerings like bacon flavored fava bean snacks springing up.

“I didn’t believe it myself until one of our customers handed me the chip with the seasoning blend with the fava bean. I was really shocked to taste bacon flavor notes out of fava bean.”

Other trends discussed transparency, sustainability, and the hottest ingredients. Kreienbrink also makes trend predictions for the year ahead. To hear the entire conversation, including what Kreinenbrink calls the “new whey protein of sports nutrition,” take a listen to the NutraCast.
