Sports nutrition company Momentous, co founded by a former professional skateboarder, has garnered $5 million in Series A funding in a round led by venture capital firm FitLab, which focuses on human performance companies.

Momentous, which was founded in 2018, features a who’s who list of athletes and trainers who are associated with the brand.  They include NFL football players, professional rock climbers and skiers, and endurance athletes.  The list also includes strength coaches and nutritionists associated with professional football and baseball teams.

The brand was co founded by media personality and former professional skateboarder Rob Dyrdek.  The other co founder, Matt Wan, serves as CEO.

Transparency on ingredients

Momentous markets a range of sports nutrition products aimed strength performance, sleep and recovery.  Among the prominent ingredients are whey, pea and rice proteins.

The products include a lengthy list of ingredient information, including fairly detailed sourcing information which in some cases includes the ingredient manufacturer.  The company uses branded ingredients in some cases, including Magtein, a branded form of magnesium, which is distributed by AIDP and Fortigel, a bioactive collagen peptide developed and manufactured by Gelita.

Momentous joins FitLab’s investment stable, which also includes Freeletics, billed as the world’s fastest growing digital fitness company. FitLab led a $45 million Series A round of funding for Freeletics late last year. As part of FitLab’s partnership with Momentous, FitLab founders Brian Kirkbride and Mike Melby will join the company’s Board of Directors. Momentous’ leadership team says it intends to relocate the company from its current headquarters in Jackson Hole, WY to Los Angeles.

Surfeit of certifications

The Momentous founders claim the company’s products are now purchased by more than 100 professional and collegiate teams and performance facilities from the NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL and NCAA. The products feature both NSF and Informed Choice sports certifications.

“We have spent the last decade investing in and operating companies across fitness and sport, and over the last few years have performed an intensive review of the nutritional supplements landscape in search of the ideal company to invest in and partner with our broader portfolio of brands. Momentous’ relentless focus on performance, quality and transparency made it the clear choice,” said Kirkbride.
