We announced the winners of the NutraIngredients-USA Awards 2019 last week - here are the best photos from our evening at The Chicory in New Orleans.

Over 100 people gathered to help the 29 finalists in 10 categories to celebrate success and innovation across the US nutrition and dietary supplements industry.

The awards were sponsored by DuPont and KGK Science.

"To be named as a finalist, let alone a winner, is significant"

The Awards were hosted by Stephen Daniells, PhD, Editor-in-Chief of NutraIngredients-USA.

“NutraIngredients-USA is a trusted and respected content leader for this industry, and we carry that rigor and integrity through to the NutraIngredients-USA Awards. It was another superb year for entries, and to be named as a finalist, let alone a winner, is significant. Congratulations to all you!” said Daniells.

A commitment to excellence

The NutraIngredients-USA Awards 2019 were sponsored by DuPont and KGK Science. Here, Najla Guthrie, President/CEO - KGK Science, addresses the attendees.

"These awards recognize the best products, project and individuals in our industry, and we are proud to be supported by two companies that embody this commitment to excellence," said NutraIngredients-USA's Daniells.

Ingredient of the Year: Healthy Aging

Tru Niagen (ChromaDex) was named the winner, with judges heralding Tru Niagen as a ‘breakthrough ingredient’ for the healthy aging category.

“This award highlights the body of research that helped to secure our two NDI notifications and GRAS status for Niagen,” said Matthew Roberts, PhD, ChromaDex Chief Scientific Officer and SVP of Innovation,  who accepted the award on behalf of the company.

CarnoSyn (Natural Alternatives International, Inc.) took gold, with our judges lauding the ingredient's strong scientific portfolio.

"We are honored to have received this esteemed award from NutraIngredients," said Mark LeDoux, NAI CEO & Chairman (pictured). "On behalf of our dedicated team, our researchers and millions of happy users, we will continue the effort to provide the most rigorous scientific support for CarnoSyn as the only beta-alanine to receive NDI status from the FDA. Consumers should not settle for anything less than the best—CarnoSyn beta-alanine."

Probiotic product of the year

Astarte (HSO Health Care) was named the winner for its women’s health probiotic product. Our judges were impressed by the devotion to well-designed clinical studies and intelligent, logical, systematic product design.

NutraIngredients-USA's Daniells commented: “We received a lot of very strong entries for the probiotic product category, but Astarte really stood out for its commitment to science. This product won the same category at our European awards earlier this year, and our judges concurred that Astarte is a very impressive product in the burgeoning women’s health category.”

John West from Jarrow Formulas accepted the award on behalf of HSO Health Care.

Herbalist & Alchemist’s Adaptogenic Line (Herbalist & Alchemist) was named the winner, with the award being received by Beth Lambert, the company's CEO.

Adaptogens are fast becoming a 50-year overnight success, and H&A's David Winston literally wrote the book on the topic. The company's adaptogenic line impressed our judges with its focused approach, with adaptogens formulated for specific purposes, rather than the one-size-fits-all adaptogen message common in the industry.

Omega-3 product of the year

A "functional food" won with this category, with Naked Tuna in Water (Good Catch Foods) catching our judges' eyes with its omega-3-rich plant-based formulation. The product, which has already achieved a significant amount of commercial success in a short period of time, met all the judging criteria on innovation, consumer need, application, commercial, and the X-factor.

Personalized nutrition initiative

The Prenatal DHA Initiative (OmegaQuant) came out on top in the competitive personalized nutrition category. Becky Wright, OmegaQuant's Marketing & Communications Director, received the award on behalf of the company.

The judges were impressed by the application of the omega-3 index measures to an especially sensitive population, to not only shine a light on the technology but also on the critical issue of DHA intake during pregnancy and how to increase those levels.

“Most American women don't get enough DHA before or during pregnancy, so the Prenatal DHA Test can help personalize the issue and motivate women to get more DHA in their diet,” said Kristina Harris Jackson, PhD, RD, who invented the Prenatal DHA Test, alongside longtime omega-3 researcher Dr William Harris, PhD.

“Our ultimate goal is to help make pregnancy safer for women and their babies, which is why we want to bring more awareness to the importance of getting more DHA in the diet and using a Prenatal DHA Test to guide appropriate intake,” she added.

Start-up of the year

Plasma Nutrition was named the winner, with our judges noting the company has created a platform rather than just a product. The company has invested in science, and are supported by peer-reviewed, published human trials showing superiority of their whey protein ingredient over standard whey.

“Our team has demonstrated tremendous success both clinically and commercially, and it is humbling to have this success recognized by such a prestigious award,” said VP of Business Development Benoit Turpin, who received the award for the company. “Having been in this industry for over 30 years, I have never seen anything with the potential of Ingredient Optimized technology. This really is just the start for us.”

Nutrition research project

Kristen Marshall from Verdure Sciences received the nutrition research project award on behalf of the company for the entry: Retinal amyloid pathology and proof-of-concept imaging clinical trial with Longvida Optimized Curcumin.

This entry really stood out to the judges for its combination of a nutrition intervention (curcumin) with industry-changing technology to potentially provide a low-cost, non-invasive technique to pre-screen at-risk populations using high-resolution imaging of a person’s amyloid-beta burden. The implications are potentially game changing.

“It is very exciting to see Longvida’s ability to cross blood brain and blood retinal barriers used in tangible applications with the potential to impact so many lives,” said Marshall

Ajay Patel, Founder and CEO of Verdure Sciences, added: “To be recognized in this category with the amazing research being done on the cross-functionally of dietary supplements, functional foods and beverages, and ingredients is an honor in its own right. To be chosen as an example of excellence in research is even more extraordinary."

Verdure collaborated with NeuroVision Imaging, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, and UCLA on the project.

Editors Award for Industry Initiative of the Year
Editors Award for Industry Initiative of the Year

The NutraIngredients-USA Editorial team were delighted to recognize the ABC-AHP-NCNPR Botanical Adulterants Prevention Program (BAPP) for this year’s Editors’ Award for Industry Initiative. The award was presented to ABC Development Director Denise Meikel (pictured).

The program advises industry, researchers, health professionals, government agencies, the media, and the public about the various challenges related to adulterated botanical ingredients sold in commerce. To date, BAPP has produced 50 credible and authoritative peer-reviewed documents; plus interviews with trade media; speeches at industry, scientific and professional conferences; and direct consultation with members of the industry.

Stefan Gafner, PhD, chief science officer of ABC and technical director of BAPP, said: “This award belongs to all the companies, organizations, analytical laboratories, and individuals who have contributed to BAPP by supporting it financially or by allocating time and resources to make this a successful program. It is their support that allows the initiative to succeed, and ultimately to prevent adulterated ingredients from being used in consumer products."

NutraIngredients-USA’s NutraChampion: Elan Sudberg, CEO of Alkemist Labs
NutraIngredients-USA’s NutraChampion: Elan Sudberg, CEO of Alkemist Labs

This year the editorial team of NutraIngredients-USA chose two NutraChampions for their considerable contributions to the industry.

Elan Sudberg has worked tirelessly for the dietary supplements industry, most of it behind the scenes, to elevate the conversation around testing and product quality not just with Alkemist Labs but also by his selfless participation in numerous industry associations, committees and initiatives.

NutraIngredients-USA's Daniells commented: “Those involved in the industry will be acutely aware of Elan’s tireless advocacy for dietary supplement quality. Alkemist Labs, founded by his father Sidney, is recognized as a leader in the testing of botanicals. But it is Elan’s generous support of industry initiatives, his leadership of key trade association committees, and his fierce demand that the industry continue to raise the quality bar that mark him as a NutraChampion."

We were also proud to be able honor the significant contribution of Paul Schulick, who shifted the paradigm on dietary supplements with New Chapter, leveraging his platform to inspire change throughout the industry that all started with New Chapter’s whole food probiotic nutrients integrated with holistic herbal extracts. His commitment to organic and non-GMO certifications blazed a trail for others to follow.

NutraIngredients-USA's Daniells said: “Throughout his career, Paul has consistently challenged the industry on how to think about health and wellness and supplement formulation. He also championed organic and non-GMO before many others and is a true giant of the industry. The NutraIngredients-USA Editorial Team is delighted to honor the industry-changing work of Paul Schulick.”
