NutraIngredients-USA awards 2018 are open – Meet our expert judges

Entries are open for the inaugural NutraIngredients-USA Awards to honor the best and brightest in ingredients, finished products, companies, people, and initiatives in the nutrition and dietary supplements industry. Here are the industry experts who will form part of the judging panel.

The NutraIngredients-USA Awards will take place in Chicago on Monday, July 16.  

The awards are open to companies across the globe, providing their products or ingredients are available in North America.

The 12 award categories include:

The cost per entry is $175 for all categories except the NutraChampion award and Editors' Award for Industry Initiative, for which entry is free. Entries will close on May 28, 2018.

The awards will feature a panel of esteemed judges with a wealth of experience in APAC's health and nutrition industry, including (in alphabetical order):

Mike Archbold is the former CEO of GNC. He is a proven leader with significant retail experience with 30+ years of experience with strategic, operational and financial leadership across several national retailers, including GNC Holdings and Vitamin Shoppe, Inc. Mike has served in multiple capacities including CFO, CAO and CEO.

Significant accomplishments include taking a company public (Vitamin Shoppe), taking a company private and leading a turnaround (Talbots) and strategic and cultural transformation (GNC).

He is the winner of the 2017 Efforts on Behalf of the Industry award by Nutrition Business Journal.

Dr Jeffrey Blumberg is a Professor in the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy and also serves as the Senior Scientist in the Antioxidants Research Laboratory at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University.

His research is focused on the biochemical basis for the role of antioxidant nutrients and their dietary requirements in promoting health and preventing disease during the aging process via changes in status of oxidative stress, glucoregulation, and inflammation. He has published more than 400 scientific articles and serves on the editorial boards of several scientific journals. Dr. Blumberg was included in 2015 Thomson Reuters’ List of the World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds (top 1% of cited researchers in his field, 2002-2014). In 2016, he was the recipient of the ASN Mary Swartz Rose Senior Investigator Award for outstanding research on the safety and efficacy of bioactive compounds for human health.

Dr. Blumberg also participates in activities relevant to the incorporation of sound nutrition science into public health policy and has served as a member of the Workshop on Health Promotion and Aging in the office of the U.S. Surgeon General, Sports Medicine Committee of the U.S. Olympic Committee, consultation on Preparation and Use of Food-Based Dietary Guidelines for the WHO/FAO, Food Advisory Committee of the FDA, and other committees.

Mark Blumenthal is the Founder and Executive Director of the American Botanical Council (ABC), an independent, nonprofit organization, ABC is dedicated to disseminating accurate, reliable, and responsible information on herbs and medicinal plants. Mark is the Editor-in-Chief and Publisher of HerbalGram, an international peer-reviewed quarterly journal, the contents of which reflect the educational goals of ABC.

He is also Founder and Director of the ABC-AHP-NCNPR Botanical Adulterants Program, a consortium of nonprofit organizations that researches and educates industry members and other stakeholders on the adulteration of botanical raw materials, extracts, and essential oils in the global supply network. ABC is partnered with the American Herbal Pharmacopoeia and the University of Mississippi’s National Center for Natural Product Research, a U.S. Food and Drug Administration Center of Excellence in botanical laboratory analysis.

With more than 43 years of diverse experience as an herbal advocate, consultant, educator, researcher, writer and advisor, Mark has an extensive comprehensive background in the area of herbs and medicinal plants.

Dr Paul Forsythe is Assistant Professor and Principal Investigator at the McMaster Brain-Body Institute, St Joseph’s Healthcare and Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health, McMaster University, Canada. He has a strong interest in neural regulation of immunity, which he pursued during his PhD at Queen’s University Belfast and Post-Doctoral studies at the University of Alberta.

Dr Forsythe’s current research explores the neuro-immuno-endocrine super-system in the context of the holobiont (defined as the group of commensal organisms that comprise a biological unit), with a particular focus on identifying mechanisms underlying the influence of gut microbes, and their products, on the development and progression of diverse pathophysiological responses such as allergy, inflammation and mood disorders.

Bruce Holub, PhD is University Professor Emeritus, Department of Human Health & Nutritional Sciences at the University of Guelph. He has served as President, Nutrition Society of Canada and Chair, Nutrition Task Force (Heart & Stroke Foundation of Ontario). He has authored over 200 papers in scientific journals (medical, nutrition, other) in addition to various book chapters and conference proceedings.

His research program is focused on dietary omega-3 fatty acids (DHA plus EPA) from fish/fish oils and resulting nutraceutical supplementation plus functional foods for human health and the roles for DHA/EPA in supporting optimal cognitive performance , visual acuity , and other health outcomes throughout the life cycle plus improving the prevention/management of cardiovascular disease risk factors/events and other chronic disorders (inflammatory conditions incl. arthritis and dry eye syndrome, certain cancers , asthma, mental deteriorations, others).

As well, he has been active in the evaluation of nutraceuticals and agri-foods for improving human health, disease prevention and management, and their potential for considerable cost-savings to the healthcare system.

Ewa Hudson is Head of Market Insights for Lumina Intelligence, a new business intelligence service from William Reed (publisher of NutraIngredients-USA). Prior to that Ewa managed the global Health and Wellness, Nutrition and Ethical Labels industries at Euromonitor International, which she joined in 2003. During that time Ewa had direct responsibility over the content and quality of Euromonitor’s research, which provided strategic analysis of the global health/nutrition/ethical labels market as well as in-depth coverage of 54 countries worldwide.

Ewa has had numerous articles published in professional publications and is frequently speaking at key industry events around the world.

David Keller, DPM, MBA, of the Keller Consulting Group. The Keller Consulting group is focused on foods (ingredients and finished products, dietary supplements and cosmetics. The company will help companies plan and execute all IP, regulatory, due diligence and clinical study projects.

Previously, Dr. Keller was the Vice President of Scientific Operations with Ganeden Biotech where he began as a consultant in 2003. Dr. Keller oversaw all science related aspects of the company. This included all clinical trials (which resulted in over 25 published papers), regulatory (4 FDA GRAS notifications, as well as multiple international approvals), quality control, as well as the companies IP portfolio.

Mark Miller, PhD, MBA, FACN, CNS, is principal of Kaiviti Consulting, LLC. Dr Miller has made significant contributions as both researcher, entrepreneur and marketer in the fields of health & medicine. For three decades, he was an elite biomedical researcher & Medical School Professor, making major contributions to inflammation, oxidative & nitrosative stress, cardiovascular health, perinatal development, infant nutrition, gastroenterology, arthritis, cancer, nutrient-microbiome interactions, itch, nausea and traditional medicines centered on natural products.

Upon entering the business world, he was a successful entrepreneur matching new, validated science on natural products with unmet clinical needs and challenging the natural products industry to innovate while pursuing quality and excellence. Dr. Miller has now expanded his Professorial experience into social media and consumer education.

Timothy Morck, PhD is Founder & President of Spectrum Nutrition, LLC, a consulting firm that provides expertise in nutrition-related basic/clinical research, product development, regulatory & public policy and global scientific affairs.

Dr. Morck’s career includes clinical nutrition practice, research, and medical school faculty appointments (University of Kansas Medical Center, Eastern Virginia Medical School, VA Medical Center, Hampton, VA), scientific association management (ILSI-North America), entrepreneurial personalized nutrition start-ups (MenuDirect Corp. and DSM Personalized Nutrition), and executive and senior management positions at several global food, nutrition and pharmaceutical companies including The Dannon Company, Mead Johnson Nutritionals, Abbott Nutrition, Nestle Health Science and Nestle Corporate Affairs.

His unique multidisciplinary perspective integrates scientific affairs and marketing to achieve business objectives, with a passion for personalized approaches that improve nutrition, health, and wellness for individuals, patients, and society. The interplay between the legal, scientific, and regulatory framework surrounding medical foods has been a particularly sharp focus for him.

Terry Papadopoulos MSH, RD, LDN is currently Director of Corporate Brands at Vitacost.com, overseeing product innovation. He is a Registered Dietitian with over 15 years of experience in the health, wellness and fitness industries which includes extensive experience in the development of dietary supplements from concept to finished products.

Terry also has experience managing human clinical trials and has contributed to several publications on nutrition, food consumption, healthy eating and wellness. Terry is passionate about creating innovative solutions to help people live their best lives and has a mission to improve the health and wellness of as many people as possible.

Navindra Seeram, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences, College of Pharmacy, University of Rhode Island, USA. Prior to this, he was the Assistant Director of the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition in the Department of Medicine, University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), and an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine.

His current research group, the Bioactive Botanical Research Laboratory, investigates medicinal plants and their derived natural products for preventive and therapeutic effects against chronic human diseases. Dr. Seeram has co-authored over 160 original peer-reviewed research articles, 9 review-type articles, 17 book chapters, and 6 international patents.

He serves on the advisory board of the American Botanical Council and on the editorial advisory boards of the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, the Journal of Berry Research, and the International Journal of Applied Research in Natural Products.

Andrew Shao, PhD has spent nearly two decades in the global nutrition industry, assuming leadership roles in various nutrition, scientific, regulatory and government affairs functions. Currently, Dr. Shao serves as senior regulatory science advisor for Amway/Nutrilite. Prior to joining Amway, Dr. Shao served in various leadership roles for Herbalife Nutrition, including vice president, global nutrition policy, and VP worldwide scientific affairs.

Dr. Shao’s range of experience also includes leading the scientific and regulatory affairs function for the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), where he served as Sr VP, scientific and regulatory affairs. Before serving at CRN, Shao was a senior scientist at General Nutrition Corporation (GNC), and previously, in research and development at Kemin.

He is the author or co-author of over 60 peer-reviewed articles, abstracts, trade articles and book chapters, serves on the Editorial Board of several peer-reviewed journals, and is a member of the American Society for Nutrition and the Institute of Food Technologists.

Kantha Shelke, PhD, CFS, is the principal Corvus Blue, a food science and research firm expediting development and commercialization of honestly healthful products and technologies. Dr Shelke works at the intersection of food science and applications, food safety and regulations, new product development, education and consumer understanding.

She held senior positions at ACNielsen, Ben & Jerry’s, Continental Baking, and Grand Metropolitan Food Sector and concurrently held faculty positions at universities including Kansas State University, and University of Vermont, before launching Corvus Blue in 2000. Kantha also serves as adjunct faculty in Johns Hopkins University’s Master of Science in Food Safety Regulation program (Baltimore, MD), and visiting professor at the Department of Food Science and Nutrition, at Management Center Innsbruck (MCI), Austria.
