Dr Michael Smith honored by Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine

The Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine has recognized the significant contributions of Michael Smith, B.Pharm., ND to the advancement of naturopathic medicine and natural health product regulation in Canada and around the world with an honorary degree.

Dr Smith was recognized during the 36th convocation of the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (CCNM) last month.

Over his career Dr Smith has held a number of leadership positions at Health Canada and the Therapeutic Goods Administration in Australia, dealing primarily with regulation, research and policy development related to natural health products. Now, in addition to consulting with a number of organizations in both the private and not-for-profit sectors, he holds adjunct faculty positions at the National Center for Natural Products Research, University of Mississippi; and the National Institute for Complementary Medicine, Western Sydney University in Australia.

Since 2009, he has been a member of the World Health Organization’s Expert Advisory Panel on Traditional and Complementary Medicine.

“I congratulate Dr Smith and commend the College’s Board of Governors for selecting someone of his professional calibre as this year’s honorary degree recipient,” said CCNM President and CEO Bob Bernhardt, PhD. “Dr Smith’s commitment to the advancement of naturopathic medicine and his accomplishments over the past 20 years set excellent examples for all of our graduates to follow.”

“I am honored to be selected as this year’s honorary degree recipient by the College,” said Dr. Smith. “Since graduating from CCNM, I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to work in a number of exciting areas related to natural health products both in Canada and internationally. I feel very privileged to be recognized for my work and contributions.”
