Dubbed NWT-03 with a brand name of NewtriFlow, the ingredient was an outgrowth of company founder Jos Nelissen’s drive to find value-added ingredients to grow his success egg business.
“I was successful in our family’s egg production farm which we built out as one of the biggest in the Netherlands. We went searching for added value in our product. We discovered with scientists what a beautiful product eggs are with all of the nutrients that are needed for new life. We started there a totally new business to search for nutrients that could be beneficial for human health,” he said.
Nelissen said three double-blind, placebo-controlled human studies with more than 200 subjects have shown the ingredient has a beneficial effect on 4 of the 5 risk factors of metabolic syndrome.
These results demonstrate the following:
- Decrease of triglycerides by 18%
- Reduction of blood glucose levels/increase of insulin sensitivity
- Blood pressure reduction
- Relaxation of blood vessels
- Increase of low HDL cholesterol
In addition to the studies in humans, which are pending publication, the company said several studies were conducted in animals to elucidate mechanisms of action and to get a feeling for long term effects. These studies showed a protective effect of NewtriFlow on the kidneys of diabetic rats as a consequence of the beneficial effect on the vasculature and blood biochemistry.
“Pre diabetes is very big because one out of three Americans is pre diabetic,” Nelissen said. The ingredient has a relatively large dose, at 3 to 5 grams, and so would be best for beverage or functional food delivery, Nelissen said.
