The company is introducing its the PureSynapse product line, which includes four specialty formulas for emotional health, memory and behavior formulated called SeroPlus, DopaPlus, NeuroPure and Amino Replete.
Kelly Heim, PhD, nutritional pharmacologist at Pure Encapsulations, explained that each product in the series is based on decades of research and clinical experience to support the coordinated steps of neuronal communication.
“Specialty products, such as SeroPlus, DopaPlus and NeuroPure are very novel formulations,” Dr Heim told us. “With every formulation, doses of each ingredient are individually consistent with published research.”
The range
The PureSynapse line currently contains four products, but the company said additional products will be introduced in the fall of 2013.
The SeroPlus product is designed to support serotonin levels, lessening occasional stress and maintaining healthy eating behaviors. The DopaPlus product is said to promote healthy dopamine levels for daily mental sharpness and memory. The NeuroPure product is designed to provide enhanced support for overall emotional well-being by boosting both serotonin and dopamine levels. The Amino Replete is said to deliver a comprehensive blend of free-form amino acids required for the synthesis of neurotransmitters and neuropeptides.
“Key ingredients include amino acid precursors to neurotransmitters and cofactors required for their presynaptic synthesis and/or postsynaptic actions,” explained Dr Heim. “Phytochemicals that target enzymes such as MAO or COMT, which degrade serotonin and catecholamines, are included in a number of formulations to help maintain synaptic durability of neurotransmitters once they are synthesized and released.
“There is published clinical evidence substantiating the efficacy of precursors, such as 5-HTP and L-tyrosine. The most expansive body of research addresses the biosynthetic cofactors, such as methyl donors, magnesium and zinc.
“What is most recent and rapidly evolving is the research on polyphenols such as curcumin and flavonoids, which function through an array of pre- and post-synaptic events to support mood, cognition and other critical aspects of psychiatric care.”
‘Neuronal communication’
The products are intended for the healthcare practitioners market, which should facilitate communicating the benefits of how nutrition influences neurology.
“To many consumers, consideration of the human mind in biochemical terms is daunting,” said Dr Heim. “However, most people understand that neurons have a role of communicate in some way; for example, they allow the brain to instruct movement of the limbs. It is straightforward to present the mind as a message network, with the synapse as the core communication unit, at which diverse ingredients mechanistically converge. The synapse can be schematized to a simple figure of two neurons and the space between them, yet represent the pharmacology of supplements in a scientifically accurate manner.”
The product line allows flexibility on the part of the practitioner to determine what product, or combination, is ideal for the patient, added Dr Heim. “The formulation of each product never assumes that another product will be taken concurrently.”
