Rather than grabbing some garden-variety botanicals off the shelf, the product, dubbed Pre3 Max, is built around three branded ingredients from major suppliers all with science results backing their action: Powergrape from Naturex, CapsiMax Plus from Omniactive and PL Thomas’ Rhodiolife.
“It’s got three superstar ingredients all designed to give you a preworkout edge,” said Rob Maru, chief innovation officer of Re-Body.
“When you take them all together your are going to get increased energy, increased endurance to power your workout.”
Maru said going where the science results pointed was a key part of the product formulation strategy. Re-Body didn’t want to make claims they couldn’t back up, he said.
“We don’t take that silver bullet approach,” he told NutraIngredinets-USA.
“When you look at preworkout supplements today they are mostly put out by very edgy sports companies and rarely do they have any science to back up the claims that they make."
Science backed ingredients
Powergrape is Naturex’s full-spectrum extract of Bordeaux grapes, designed to deal with oxidative stress from strenuous acitivity. Naturex says test results show a 24% increase in performance on a standardized athletic test and an 8% increase in recovery capcity following 12 weeks of supplementation with a 400mg daily Powergrape dose.
CapsiMax Plus is Omniactive’s proprietary blend of capsicum, caffeine, piperine (black pepper extract) and niacin. (Re-Body does offer a version of the finished product using a caffeine-free version.) Capsicum has been shown to increase metabolism, suppress appetite and positively affect body composition, but compliance with weight loss regimens using this ingredient is poor because the gastric effects are uncomfortable for many Western users. CapsiMax gets around this problem with a proprietary beadlet technology that controls the release of the hot pepper.
Rhodiolife is PT Thomas’ full-spectrum rhodiola extract. Rhodiola has long been used as an adaptogen and tonic in its native region in Siberia and it is said to boost stamina. PLT says there are three published studies backing the ingredients’ benefits.
Give core strategies
The Re-Body brand is built around five core strategies, each with products to match, Maru said. These include increasing metabolism, controlling appetite, shedding belly fat, supporting daily nutrition and getting a better workout, which is where Pre3 Max comes in.
“If they get to the gym and workout and get more results from their workout they are more likely to stay on a weight loss regimen,” he said.
The product will be sold online and through natural channel stores, Maru said.
More launches in the line are planned, Maru said, including a fat metabolism supplement and a meal replacement product, both aiming for a launch at the upcoming Natural Products Expo West show in March.
