Norwegian firm applies for EU novel foods status for shrimp oil

Norwegian firm Calanus AS has applied to the UK Food Standards Agency for European Union novel foods approval to market an omega-3 oil derived from the miniature North Atlantic Ocean shrimp, Calanus finmarchicus.

“The applicant intends that the oil will be marketed in the form of food supplements, and it is one of an increasing number of oils rich in the polyunsaturated fatty acids docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA),” the FSA wrote.

Global algae-sourced omega-3 player, DSM-Martek BioSciences, is another that has applied for EU novel foods status for an algae-sourced DHA/EPA blend.
