DSM sells Personalized Nutrition business
Royal DSM ongoing focus as a life sciences company has continued with the sale of its Personalized Nutrition business to New Jersey firm, Viocare.

Personalized Nutrition was a niche business for DSM that offered nutrition advice to companies seeking to improve the nutrition of their workforces.

The undisclosed deal will see DSM Personalized Nutrition, established in 2005, pass to Viocare, a company DSM bought a minority stake in in 2009 via DSM Venturing.

A DSM Venturing representative will take a seat on Viocare's Board of Directors.

A small business

DSM spokesperson Herman Betten told NutraIngredients: “DSM Personalized Nutrition was a small business that basically functions as a corporate wellness programme for employers and employees.”

“It no longer fits our strategy and is a much better fit for Viocare.”

The DSM Personalized Nutrition website states the service provided:

  • One-on-one wellness coaching
  • Health assessments
  • Biometric screenings
  • Personalized action plans
  • Superior reporting
  • Online tools and resources
  • Health challenges and other events
  • Ongoing educational aids
  • The ability to customize the program to your needs, including multi-lingual, multi-cultural capabilities

Rob van Leen, chief innovation officer at DSM, said of the sale: "Our investment in Viocare in conjunction with the divestment of our corporate wellness business allows Viocare to further expand and mature this business, while concurrently enabling Viocare to continue to advance its leadership position as a supplier of scientifically validated software tools for the nutrition and wellness community."

Rick Weiss, founder and president of Viocare, added: "This investment further validates our vision that by deploying technology solutions that personalize diet and fitness recommendations based upon the latest scientifically validated advancements in nutrition and behaviour change we can make a real difference in the long term health and wellness of the global population."
