Schiff Nutrition gets exclusive sales rights for Aker krill oil

Krill supplier Aker BioMarine has undertaken to deliver up to 300 metric tons of krill oil per year to Schiff Nutrition, as the companies expand their supply agreement through 2016.

According to the terms of the deal, Schiff is granted certain exclusive sales rights, and the companies are to collaborate on future innovations.

“Aker BioMarine delivers high quality Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified krill oil. This agreement secures a sustainable source capable of meeting our growth aspirations,”​ Tarang Amin, president and CEO of Schiff Nutrition International.

“In addition, we have plans to leverage Aker BioMarine's expertise and collaborate on future krill products and innovation.”

Hallvard Muri, CEO, Aker BioMarine said that Schiff offers a long-term growth platform for his company.

“We are pleased to partner with the company to further develop the benefits of our phospholipid krill with no fishy taste or smell,” ​said Muri. “Schiff Nutrition has invested in growing this category, and we look forward to working with the team on future category-building initiatives,”

Understanding krill

Krill are tiny shrimp gaining attention as a rich source of omega-3, as well as other nutrients.

There are about 85 species of the deepwater marine planktonic crustacean, or deepwater shrimp, which are the planet's most abundant animal biomass and which when captured and converted to oil, pack 48 times the antioxidant punch of standard fish oils, according to ORAC antioxidant scales.
