NutraIngredients-USA presents a round up of movements in the nutra sector, including changes at NPA, CRN, and BI Nutraceuticals.

After five years at the Natural Products Association (NPA), Daniel Fabricant, PhD, will enter government service as FDA’s Director of its Division of Dietary Supplement Programs. Dr Fabricant held the position of global government and scientific affairs for the NPA.

“I am grateful for the opportunities I had at NPA and feel immensely proud of all that has been achieved during my time at the association on the scientific, regulatory and government affairs fronts,” said Fabricant in an email. “I wish the association continued success in the future and want to thank my excellent team for their great work and support.”

Fabricant’s responsibilities will transition to Cara Welch, PhD, and Liz Hurst.

Herbalife Ltd. announced that Andrew Shao, PhD, is joining the company on March 7, 2011 as vice president, global product science and safety. Dr Shao is well known in the industry as senior VP of regulatory and scientific affairs for the Council of Responsible Nutrition.

At Herbalife, Shao will be responsible for assuring that all products sold by Herbalife are safe, meet regulatory safety requirements, and that all product claims are scientifically supportable, ensuring Herbalife's leadership position in the industry.

It has been a busy month at BI Nutraceuticals, as the company announced the hiring of Theresa Reid Aranda as its Director of Procurement, Lindsay Monsivaiz as Buyer, and Betsy Fallon as West Coast Regional Sales Manager the company announced today.

Stratas Foods LLC announced that Tedd Kruse was appointed to the position of Chief Executive Officer effective January 3, 2011. Stratas is a joint venture of ADM and ACH Food Companies (a subsidiary of Associated British Foods). Kruse previously held the position of VP of sweetener sales for ADM.

In December, Cyvex Nutrition appointed Katherine Bond as its Director of Business Development, to help oversee all of Cyvex's sales and marketing channels, determine growth opportunities and implement appropriate strategies. "Katherine demonstrates an ideal combination of sales and business marketing experience, and we are excited she's on board as we usher in another year of continued growth," said Matt Phillips, president of Cyvex Nutrition.

Ulrick & Short Ltd, supplier of clean label ingredients announced the appointment of Elaine Bourke as a research and development technologist, and Emma Davidson joins the company as its new in-house accountant.

According to the company, Ms Bourke is particularly interested in the behavior of functional ingredients and nutragenomics and hopes that her experience in nutritional science will help Ulrick & Short deliver even more exciting clean label products during 2011.

Contract research provider Alkemists Labs announced the appointment of Kelly Reins as Executive Director of Laboratory Operations & Compliance. Reins will lead the overall strategic growth of its analytical services division.

Specialty ingredients manufacturers the E.T. Horn Company appointed Dr Roger Clemens as Chief Scientific Officer. He will assume the post full time along with his continued presidency of the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), and academic appointment at the University of Southern California.

Cyanotech Corporation’s new president and CEO Brent Bailey took the reins of the company two months after being named by the Board of Directors.

BioExx Specialty Proteins Ltd. announced the appointment of Henry Linsert Jr. to its Board of Directors. Paul McClory retired from the Board of Directors, following more than 13 years involvement with the genesis and evolution of BioExx.
