Weight management success shows sports nutrition potential

During a visit to Glanbia Nutritionals in Twin Falls, Idaho, Loren Ward, director of R&D, told Stephen Daniells how clinical data supporting successful weight loss may also have implications for sports nutrition.

Despite the company's expertise in protein, and protein being the most satiating of the macronutrients, the company's flagship weight management ingredient Prolibra does not promote satiety, but can help decrease fat mass while maintaining lean body mass in combination with a hypocaloric diet.

Ward explains that the company has not looked at the satiety angle, and they may look at this area in future.

Ward also explains how clinical data for weight management ingredients can have implications for sports nutrition. "Anytime you do human clinical research, the findings taht you come up with can, to a certain extent, be applied to other different areas. From a muscle physiology standpoint and body fat, you can extend this into other areas," said Ward.

Prolibra is a partially hydrolyzed whey protein isolate, high in protein and low in fat. Earlier this year it received a US patent
