PLT and Polinat team up for ingredient development

PL Thomas (PLT) and Spanish firm Polifenoles Naturales (Polinat) are pooling their resources to develop and market functional food ingredients in both Europe and the United States.

The two firms have already been working together for the past decade, with PLT marketing Polinat’s ingredients in the US. The new alliance will see the firms collaborating on the identification of market needs and the development of new ingredients to meet these.

Polinat will bring its research and production strengths to the partnership, while PLT will drive the sales and marketing, PLT told NutraIngredients-USA.com. “It’s a great opportunity to combine the two competencies”.

Dr Miquel Jimenez, president of Polinat, stated that "PLT's close ties with the industry enable us to identify precise customer requirements, allowing us to dedicate our scientific efforts and manufacturing skills to finding the best solutions.”

Polinat, which is based in the city of Las Palmas on Gran Canaria Island, Spain, has recently established new R&D facilities, including analytical, cell and molecular biology laboratories. From there, the firm’s scientists will tap into the potential of a library of botanicals and initial research.

As part of the alliance, PLT and Polinat have jointly appointed a scientist Vladimir Badmaev, MD, PhD, to work on ingredient research. The firms said particular emphasis will be placed on studying the effects of Polinat's new ingredient candidates on gene expression before moving on to additional testing.

Antioxidant, weight management and energy

PLT and Polinat are kicking off their collaboration by promoting three ingredients: an antioxidant, a weight management ingredient and an ingredient for sustained energy.

The ingredients were highlighted at the companies’ joint booth at Vitafoods last month, and PLT says it is now in the process of introducing the products to the US market.

The first, Xanthigen, is a combination of pomegranate oil standardized for punicic acid and brown sea weed extract standardized for fucoxanthin. It is being marketed for its weight management potential, and is said to help improve liver function for weight loss, reduced body and liver fat, and energy expenditure.

RhodioLife is a standardized composition of the Rhodiola Rosea plant. It is said to help provide sustained energy and boost physical performance by supporting functional healthy biological response modifiers necessary for healthy immune, cardio pulmonary and endocrine systems.

The third ingredient, FruitOx, is an antioxidant formulation made of a blend of standardized fruit extracts, tested for their ability to improve blood lipid profiles, total cholesterol levels and cardiovascular health.

GMPs

Polinat’s production plants are cGMP audited, with “full traceability and versatile extraction systems using water or ethanol solvents, variable pressures, and the most modern separation technologies,” said the firms.
