Wider patent protection for sports nutrition ingredient

Sports nutrition ingredient, Peak ATP, will benefit from wider market protection after its manufacturer, Missoula-based, TSI Health Sciences was awarded new, wider-ranging patent protection covering dosing rates, delivery methods and use with other compounds.

The new patent covers methods for increasing muscle strength and muscle mass through oral supplementation of ATP and methods of administering effective doses.

Larry Kolb, president of US operations for TSI Health Sciences, told NutraIngredientsUSA.com: “The patent covers a method of increasing muscle strength and muscle mass of a mammal comprising the steps of administering an effective amount of ATP in between 150mg to 850mg, or 7.5mg ATP/kg body weight to 14 mg ATP/kg body weight.”

Intramuscular

A range of delivery methods are covered including: Oral, parenteral, sublingual, topical, transdermal, intramuscular and inhalation. The delivery forms specified in the patent include: Tablets, capsules, powder, graunle, micorgranule, pellet, soft gel, controlled-release form, liquid, solution, elixir, syrup, suspension, emulsion and magma.

The new patent also covers the use of ATP with one or more popular sports nutrition ingredients. These include compounds selected from the group of amino acids, proteins, carbohydrates and botanicals for increasing muscle strength and mass.

Peak ATP provides the exact molecule the human body needs to create energy, making it effective for a variety of clinical indications, such as energy, athletic performance and anti-aging, said TSI Health Sciences.

The ingredient is said to raise ATP levels in blood and tissues, enhance the delivery of glucose, nutrients and oxygen to working and recovering muscles and to help remove catabolic waste products. It also regulates vascular tone to reduce pulmonary and systemic vascular resistance, without affecting blood pressure or heart rate, and enhances cerebral blood flow.

This means, according to Kolb, that Peak ATP: “Increases overall energy levels, reduces fatigue and enhances general well-being; benefits muscle growth, strength and recovery, thereby improving athletic performance and helps combat the effects of aging, by supporting cardiovascular and respiratory health and boosting mental acuity.”

Portfolio of patents

The latest patent extends the existing portfolio of patents TSI has licensed from Dr. Eliezer Rapaport. The company said it worked with Rapaport for more than 30 years and spent “a lot of money,” in Peak ATP development.

Kolb concluded: “… in terms of supporting energy and human performance, Peak ATP is the ultimate ingredient for supplementation. The timing is great for sports companies to embrace Peak ATP, a highly effective, clinically substantiated performance ingredient with a strong safety profile.”

The company reported that leading brands in the sports nutrition sector are using Peak ATP in formulas to be launched next year and beyond. The product is the first legitimate entry of ATP - adenosine triphosphate - into the marketplace, it claims
