The OmegaAid ingredient, a mixture of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) omega-3 fatty acids with PS, is being claimed by the company as the "ultimate nutritional ingredient for brain and nerve function support, for people of all ages."
PS (phosphatidylserine) is a phospholipid that occurs naturally in the organs such as brain, liver and kidneys.
It plays an important role in regulating the functionality of key proteins in cell membrances, and has been shown to have a role in slowing or even reversing some forms of age-related cognitive deteriorations - such as short term memory and the capacity to learn new tasks.
PS has been used as a supplement for the last 20 years.
Initially it was sourced from bovine brains, but fears over 'mad cow disease' led the industry to prefer soy lecithin-derived PS.
Although it has a different fatty acid composition, the effect on cognition has been shown to be similar.
"OmegaAid PS is the natural evolution of combining marine sourced omega-3 fatty acids with PS, utilizing Chemi's proprietary manufacturing expertise, and supported by Chemi's numerous patents," said Scott Hagerman, president of Chemi Nutra.
"As a rich source of both biologically active DHA and EPA omega-3 fatty acids along with PS, OmegaAid PS is the world's most innovative nutraceutical for optimal mental and mood health."
Two health claims for PS have been granted by the FDA, related to cognitive dysfunction and dementia in the elderly.
Omega-3 fatty acids have been linked to a wide-range of health benefits, including reduced risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and certain cancers, good development of a baby during pregnancy, joint health, and improved behaviour and mood.
The US cognitive market for supplements is estimated to worth around $350m.
