BASF is introducing two new grades of coenzyme Q10 in the US next
week, which it says makes it the first company to offer customers a
choice between formulations for use in multivitamin tablets and for
softgels.

SoluQ10 5% and Coenzyme Q10 10% DC will be showcased for the first time in the US at the SupplySide East trade show in Secaucus, New Jersey, May 1 to 3.

Coenzyme Q10 is a 10% DC is a stable, fast-acting powder for direct compression into tablets. The company says it means manufacturers no longer need go through the wet granulation and compaction processes that are necessary when working with conventional powders.

Solu Q10 5%, meanwhile, is a solubilizate of CoQ10 said to have excellent liquid dosing properties for use in softgels. BASF says that it shows superior bioavailability in humans compared to standard oily dispersions and crystalline CoQ10. Moreover, it is a high load solubilizate, which means it uses fewer formulation aids than others on the market and therefore makes for simpler product ingredient lists.

CoQ10 is an antioxidant that has surged in popularity among supplement users in recent years following studies investigating its role in cardiovascular and cognitive health.

It plays a vital role in the production of chemical energy in mitochondria - the 'power plants' of cells - by participating in the production of adenosince triphosphate (ATP), the body's 'energy currency'.

Historically, US products containing CoQ10 have been dominated by supplement launches. Europe has seen more products in the cosmetics sector.
