Advantage Logistics to operate Atkins facility in Atlanta

Low carbohydrate guru Atkins Nutritionals has opted for Advantage Logistics for the second time, to operate its Atlanta distribution centre, the firm said this week, writes Wai Lang Chu.

The Atlanta site is one of three key locations in Atkins' nationwide network from which the Atkins line of foods and nutritional products are distributed to the retail market.

The agreement calls for Advantage Logistics to provide third-party logistics services, including warehouse and transportation management, for the Atkins Atlanta facility beginning this month.

The contract represents the second Atkins site to be awarded to Advantage Logistics. In October 2003, Atkins chose Advantage Logistics to manage its new Aurora distribution centre.

Norm Stafford, SVP, Customer Support Operations for Atkins said: "Our Atlanta facility is strategic to our supply chain operations, serving our customers throughout the southeastern United States."

Rick Finkbeiner, president of Advantage Logistics added:" It gives us the opportunity to build on our proven expertise in transportation and warehouse management to quickly bring this facility on line, resulting in increased efficiencies for Atkins throughout its supply chain."

Founded as Atkins Complementary Formulations in 1989, Atkins Nutritionals makes more than 50 food products (nutrition bars, shakes, bake mixes, breads) and 100 nutritional supplements (antioxidants, essential oils). The firm's products, sold in more than 30,000 stores nationwide, support a controlled-carbohydrate diet commonly known as the Atkins diet.

In December 2003. Atkins Nutritionals struck up a partnership with restaurant chain TGI Friday's and they are now serving Atkins menu items in its restaurants. Friday's deal with Atkins Nutritionals ensured its newest Atkins-approved menu items met the criteria of the Atkins nutritional approach.
