Atkins Nutritionals, the firm set up by controversial nutritionist Robert Atkins, is launching low-carbohydrate breakfast bars.

The Atkins Morning Start(TM) breakfast bars have only 2 grams of net carbohydrates, highlighted on the front of each package with the Atkins Net Carb Seal that features on the whole Atkins range. They are available in Apple Crisp and Creamy Cinnamon Bun.

The Atkins Nutritional Approach advises a restricted carbohydrate diet, focusing on high protein foods instead. However the company does not reveal the ingredients replacing the often high carbohydrate content in breakfast bars in its new product.

Breakfast bars are a growing market, with increasing numbers (Atkins suggests between 35 and 40 per cent of Americans) skipping breakfast on an almost daily basis and choosing to eat on-the-go.

Colette Heimowitz, director of education and research for Atkins Health and Medical Information Services, said: "Studies show that eating breakfast is necessary for the weight-loss process and helps curb snacking if you're following a controlled carbohydrate approach to eating. Conversely, eating foods high in carbohydrates early in the day starts a negative pattern of blood sugar spikes and valleys that can result in low energy and cravings for more inappropriate foods."

The bars will be available in local health and natural food stores and supermarkets nationwide from this month. Last month the business introduced its Endulge Ice Cream, a sugar-free ice cream.
