Carbolite Foods has introduced a new line of candy bars for people with diabetes.
The Evansville-based firm, which develops and markets food products for specific dietary demands, said consumer taste tests confirmed that the new bars tasted just like 'real' candy, with none of the 'cardboard taste' usually associated with sugar-free candy bars.
The company has used a new sweetener to 'virtually eliminate' the traditional laxative effect associated with sugar-free candy. The At Last! bars also contain Insulade, a blend of minerals including magnesium, zinc and chromium, which are said to promote better glucose metabolism.
The bars are expected to be available nationwide in March and April in five flavors: Chocolate Truffle, Chocolate Crunch, Chocolate Almond, Peanut Butter and Chocolate Mint.
"These bars fill the void for people maintaining a healthy, low glycemic lifestyle - the void between taste and blood sugar impact," said Roeland Polet, vice president at Carbolite.
There are nearly 17 million Americans with diabetes, and the figure is growing each year.
