Vitamin price fixing, an update

German fine chemicals company BASF AG does not know when the European Commission will make a decision based on its investigation into vitamin price fixing.

German fine chemicals company BASF AG does not know when the European Commission will make a decision based on its investigation into vitamin price fixing, company spokesman Harmut Unger said this week. This announcement follows earlier reports that Roche Holding AG, BASF AG andother chemical companies face record fines from the European Commission for fixing the price of vitamins. "BASF knows that an investigation is in progress," said Unger, adding that the company is cooperating with Brussels. Last year, BASF, Roche and Aventis SA paid 289 million euros in a settlement with the US authorities over vitamin price fixing. "Speculation about the size of the fine does not make sense," stressed Unger amid rumours that the fine could reach staggering figures.
