Multi-nutrient supplement shows anti-inflammatory benefits
A supplement containing a mix of B vitamins, amino acids, and botanical extracts was effective at reducing markers of inflammation, says new research.

One month of supplementation with the multi-nutrient formulation was associated with also associated with improvements in markers of pain, joint pain, strength, and power in men only, according to findings published in the Nutrition Journal​.

Women also benefited from the supplement, with improvements observed in both anxiety and balance in women, report researchers from the Human Performance Laboratory at the University of Connecticut.

“Therefore, a multi-nutrient supplement may help middle-aged individuals to prolong physical function and maintain a healthy, active lifestyle,” ​wrote the researchers.

The study was funded by Texas-based AdvoCare International, and the company provided all of the supplements and placebos used. UConn researcher Dr William Kraemer is acknowledged as being a member of the Advocare Sci-Med Board.

Inflammation

Chronic inflammation is brought about by an over-expression or lack of control of the normal protective mechanisms. It has also been linked to a range of conditions linked to heart disease, osteoporosis, cognitive decline and Alzheimer's, type-2 diabetes, and arthritis.

Study details

The new study involved 31 healthy and active men and women with an average age of 54. Volunteers were randomized to take placebo or the multi-nutrient supplement for 28 days, followed by one week of no intervention, and then 28 days on the other regime.

Results showed significant reductions in the levels of the pro-inflammatory compound called interleukin-6 (IL-6) of about 40%.

Both men and women reported perceiving improvements in their energy levels.

Perceptions of general pain and joint pain were decreased in only men, said the researchers, while anxiety and balance were improved in women only.

“It therefore appears that a multi-nutrient supplement is beneficial to recovery, inflammatory status, and performance of active men and women,”​ wrote the researchers.

“Given the importance of physical activity itself in counteracting inflammation and other indices of aging, this supplement may promote a cycle of anti-inflammatory activity and anti-aging benefits.”

Supplement contents

The supplement contained: Vitamin B5 (20mg), B6 (6 mg), folic acid (0.40 mg), B12 (0.25 mg), taurine (500 mg), 1-leucine (2,000 mg), isoleucine (500 mg), valine (500 mg), Cat’s Claw (uncaria tomentosa,​ 100 mg), quercetin (100 mg), green tea (50 mg), Biovin full spectrum whole grape extract (25 mg).
