Only 10 percent of women receiving supplements of Biothera’s Wellmune WGP branded ingredient reported upper respiratory tract infection symptoms, such as sore throat, stuffy or runny nose, and cough, compared with 29 percent of women in the control group.
Seventy-seven healthy but ‘moderately stressed’ women with an average of 38 participated in the 12 week study, and were assigned to receive either placebo or 250 mg of Wellmune WGP.
Using the Profile of Mood States (POMS) psychological survey researchers from Wellmune and SupplementWatch report that vigor was improved 41 percent in women receiving the beta-glucan supplement, compared with 7 percent in the control group. NutraIngredients-USA has not seen the full data.
“These are important findings for the millions of ‘stressed’ women around the world,” said Shawn Talbott, PhD, research director at SupplementWatch and lead investigator on the study. “This study shows that while daily stressors can ‘wear down’ immune system function, supplementing with Wellmune WGP can bolster those natural defenses and help stressed women feel and perform at their best.”
