Combining protein with Bacillus coagulans GBI-30, 6086 (GanedenBC30) may improve recovery after excessive exercise and reduce markers of muscle damage, says a study.

Data from a trial with 29 trained men indicated that casein plus GanedenBC30 was associated with smaller increases in creatine kinase (a marker of muscle damage) compared to casein alone. The combined intervention was also found to improve performance, while this declined in the casein only group.

Bacillus coagulans produce digestive enzymes that are active under gut conditions (alkaline proteases, etc.) and these proteases have been shown to digest proteins more efficiently than the endogenous human proteases alone,” wrote the researchers in PeerJ.

Bacillus coagulans GBI-30, 6086 enhances the health of the cells of the gut lining improving nutrient absorption including minerals, peptides and amino acids by decreasing inflammation and encouraging optimum development of the absorptive area of the villi.”

Study details

Scientists from Increnovo LLC and The University of Tampa recruited recreationally-trained men with an average age of 21.5  to participate in their study. The men were assigned to receive 20 grams of casein per day with or without an additional 1 billion CFUs of GanedenBC30 for two weeks prior to an exhaustive exercise session.

Results showed that performance in the protein plus probiotic group increased by 1.7%, whereas this declined by an average of 5.3% in the casein only group.

In addition, significant increases in recovery 24 and 72 hours after exercise were reported in the combined supplement group, compared to the protein only group. Soreness was also decreased 72 hours after exercise in the protein plus probiotic group, compared with the protein only intervention.

“[T]he probiotic supplement tended to protect the muscle from damage and may have helped recovery of physical performance,” wrote the authors, led by Increnovo’s Dr Ralf Jäger.

“Further studies should investigate the relationship between direct and indirect (through improved protein utilization) effects of probiotic supplementation and will provide further insights into strategies to influence the gut microbiota to optimize muscle health, specifically in an aging population with impaired nutrient utilization (sarcopenia),” they concluded.

Mike Bush, president of Ganeden and executive board president of the International Probiotics Association, commented: "We put an extensive amount of focus on the research and science behind our probiotic ingredients and since probiotic benefits are strain specific, we take pride in the impressive results that GanedenBC30 shows consistently in these studies.

“Our goal is to provide a high-quality and science-backed strain for our customers to formulate with, and we will continue providing research that helps solidify Ganeden as a probiotic leader.”
